Top Facial Rejuvenation Trends of 2020 are Revealed and BBL Tops the List

Haute Beauty has named the top facial rejuvenation trends of the year, and they might not be what you think! However, at RefinedMD we can agree that this list of in-demand procedures definitely reflects what patients at our practice are asking for to look and feel their best in times of a so-called “new normal.” One of the most popular facial rejuvenation trends happening right now is broadband light (BBL) therapy. It’s actually listed as “lasers and lights” in the Haute Beauty list, but BBL and intense pulsed light (IPL) treatments are specifically highlighted as the crème de la crème of this category.

Haute Beauty points out that “laser treatments” can actually mean a lot of things. There are a lot of laser and light technologies on the market, so it can be tough for newcomers to figure out what is best for them. That’s why it’s critical to work with an aesthetics expert that has access to a large suite of the safest and most proven technologies. These therapies can dramatically improve the skin’s tightness, tone, and texture. Deep ablative lasers vanquish the top layers of the skin to reveal younger-looking skin below the surface. They work, but can be painful and require a long recovery period. A light sedation and anaesthetic injections are required for these treatments.

Non-ablative lasers are highly preferred by most patients. They retain the outer layer of the skin while targeting the deeper layers. These treatments are generally comfortable, but for those with high sensitivity sometimes a topical anaesthetic is recommended. Another term for light therapy is photorejuvenation, and it’s been the leading non-invasive approach to improving skin in recent years. There’s also Phototherapy, which is what BBL and IPL provide, and it has quickly made its way to the top of strategies for tightening skin and improving the tone. Recovery is quick, painless, and the results are beautiful. Lasers and light can both help to remove broken blood vessels, get rid of sun damage, help with acne—and even soothe rosacea.

Cosmopolitan Shares One Woman’s Journey with BBL and Rosacea

If you have rosacea, you know how frustrating and embarrassing it can be. It’s not dangerous or painful, but nobody knows exactly what causes it and there’s no cure! We do know that there is often a hereditary link to rosacea, but that does little to help when you have a flareup. Rosacea presents as an intense blushing across the face. Wearing masks has certainly helped many rosacea patients hide flareups in the midst of COVID, but that won’t be an option forever (and it’s not even an option for all those Zoom calls).

For years, the number one “treatment” has been to identify rosacea triggers and avoid them. That’s of course still highly recommended, but did you know BBL can help soothe a rosacea flareup?

Ali Drucker shared her journey with Cosmopolitan, saying that she’s always struggled with rosacea. Any time she was exposed to the sun, she was immediately asked by everyone if she was sunburnt. Like many with rosacea, UV rays are a big trigger for Ali and even if she applied sunscreen properly, if she spent any amount of time in the sun she knew a rosacea flareup would happen.

Getting Rosacea Under Control

“I’d love to stop defending my skin care routine all the time—yea, I promise I wear sunscreen,” she told Cosmopolitan. She is also used to applying large amounts of foundation to cover up the facial redness, but when you have an inflammatory skin disease that doesn’t always help. Plus, she has sensitive skin so wearing a lot of makeup led to breakouts. “After years of this routine, I wanted out,” she said.

Ali found photofacials when she Googled “help fix red face skin rosacea please.” She liked that photofacials also helped erase sun damage, brown spots, broken capillaries, and kickstarted collagen production, too—all perks she would benefit from. Ali opted for the BBL treatment. She says it felt like a hot rubber band being snapped against the skin, not painful but definitely a sensation that caused her to flinch with every zap. However, she says, “if you’re someone whose pain threshold can tolerate a bikini wax, you can do this.” She required three 15-minute treatments spaced a few weeks apart and shares, “As for me and my results? It’s been a few weeks since my final session and I’m actually thrilled. I no longer look sunburned when I’m not wearing foundation, and my skin looks clearer than ever.”
