Hair Transplantation

Most people struggle with thinning hair or baldness from aging, genetics, or a variety of medications or illnesses. Hormonal hair loss, which can affect both men and women, is one of the most common conditions we see in patients concerned about thinning hair. There’s only one way to restore your real, natural hair in areas of loss—hair transplantation. However, a lot has changed in the world of “hair transplants,” and with Neograft 2.0 and Smart Graft, two of the most advanced hair restoration technologies both available at RefinedMD, the process is fast and very effective. Dr. Roy is an expert at Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE), a process of transplanting individual hair follicles from dense areas to areas where the hair is thinning or lost.

RefinedMD specializes in pairing the best in facial plastic surgery, including hair transplantation, with world-class dermatological solutions. Helping patients look and feel their best for life is at the heart of this clinic’s comprehensive approach. By bringing together top aesthetics providers in cosmetic dermatology and excellent facial plastic surgeons, you can enjoy a one-stop solution that gives you fully personalized approaches. How Hair Transplantation Works

The concept being hair transplantation is simple. In hormonal hair loss, hair follicles in the frontal and crown regions of the scalp are sensitive to a hormone called DHT. After binding DHT, these hair follicles undergo a slow and steady transformation that renders the hair thin and weak. Fortunately, most people have thick areas of hair at the back or side of their scalp. This hair is hormone-RESISTANT! Turns out that if you transplant such a hair from the back of the head to an area of hair loss, it grows as if it was still in the back. In some situations, hair can be transplanted from other parts of the body, such as the chest or face for men. FUE completely revolutionizes the older “strip” method of hair transplantation. This means there are no linear scars and a much faster recovery period. When individual hair follicles are transplanted, the patient is awake and alert (but relaxed) during the entire process and can even help guide the new hairline and thickness.

Both men and women can benefit from the latest in hair transplantation technology. During your consultation with Dr. Roy, a detailed analysis of your hair loss pattern will be taken while potential donor sites are determined. Every person has a different amount of follicle units suitable for transplant, and this will help determine if your hair restoration goals can be met.

Hair Transplantation Donor Areas

The process is very straightforward. Only the donor area needs to be shaved, unlike the traditional hair transplant or robotic procedures that require full scalp shaving. Shaving the area helps with the harvesting of the donor hair follicles. Next, the scalp is numbed with anesthesia and the process begins. Depending on your hair restoration goals, most procedures take 3 – 6 hours.

Hair Loss is Unique

Most people experience hair loss at the front of the hairline, temples, and/or crown. However, FUE hair transplantation can be used in virtually any location on the scalp. All grafts are carefully processed before being implanted and expertly placed by hand at the desired site. The result is a full head of hair that is thick, natural-looking, and completely your own hair.

Hair Transplantation: Neograft 2.0 vs. Smart Graft

Neograft 2.0 and Smart Graft: Similarities and Differences

Both Neograft 2.0 and Smart Graft are the latest, most effective technologies for hair transplantation currently on the market. Both devices involve an automated, manual procedure that prioritizes the harvesting of hair follicles. This vastly improves the speed and accuracy of hair transplantation compared to prior manual instruments. During the transplantation process, the donor follicles (grafts) are placed in an irrigated, humidified collection canister to best preserve them after removal. This results in the highest-quality transplants.

The best candidates for Neograft 2.0 and/or Smart Graft have mild to severe hair loss and enough donor hair follicles to be transplanted. The more donor hair you have available, the better your results. Keep in mind that your donor hair will retain its thickness, color, and texture. It’s impossible to change the physical makeup of the hair, but it is possible to attain fantastic, natural results. The number of transplantation procedures you will need will depend on your goals and stage of hair loss.

FUE hair transplantation is also a great option for those who have had “strip” hair transplants and want to camouflage their scars. The procedure can also hide scars from other cosmetic surgeries on the face including facelifts and browlifts. In some cases, patients opt for a beard or eyebrow hair transplantation, and Neograft 2.0 can also be an excellent fit to achieve these hair restoration goals.

Is FUE/NeoGraft 2.0 suitable for both men and women?

Yes! Neograft 2.0 is a great option for both men and women looking for a minimally-invasive hair restoration solution. Longer hair allows for effective concealing of the donor site, resulting in little to no evidence of having had a procedure done soon after the transplant.

How is NeoGraft 2.0 performed?

NeoGraft 2.0 uses a controlled coring device with pneumatic pressure suction to safely and efficiently slide out the harvested grafts, preventing any pulling or twisting of the grafts that can risk damaging them. Grafts are immediately stored in a humidified and intermittently irrigated collection canister on the harvesting handpiece itself. Your grafts can be re-implanted sooner, keeping them more robust and ensuring the highest possible implant yield.

What is NeoGraft 2.0?

NeoGraft 2.0 is the newest, automated manual hair transplant device on the market which facilitates the harvesting of hair follicles during a Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplant, dramatically improving the accuracy and speed over previously used manual extraction instruments. Grafts are gently aspirated into a humidified and intermittently irrigated collection canister on the harvesting handpiece itself, ensuring rapid collection and safe preservation of the grafts after being removed from the scalp, ensuring the best possible transplant result.

What Is Smart Graft?

Smart Grafts are minor surgical procedures that use state of the art tech, no scalpels, for a permanent* solution. FUE, or follicular unit extraction, is a process that transplants hair follicles from one place to another. Make use of the thick parts of your hair (most of us have them), and move that fullness to the places you need it most. No overnight stays or hospital Jell-O required.

How Does Smart Graft Work?

Smart Graft works at a microscopic level where one to four hair follicles are removed at a time and transplanted to the desired area. Thicker hair is usually found at the back of the head where you could stand to “donate” a few to thinner regions. It’s your real hair, just in the exact areas where you want it. You’ll see immediate results so there’s no wondering if the process is what you wanted. However, don’t be surprised when the follicles fall out as the new hair grows. There’s no waiting for results or wondering if the process is what you want. Customize your hair line, your thickness, and your results.

How do I know I am a good candidate for Neograft 2.0?

Candidates for hair restoration surgery are those individuals in good health with mild to severe hair loss and sufficient donor hair on the back of the scalp to transplant into the balding areas. Those with greater donor hair and higher hair density can typically expect better results. It is also important that you have reasonable cosmetic goals. Hair transplantation can achieve very good, natural results but cannot restore your hair to the density you had as a teenager. You may also need more than one transplant session to achieve your desired appearance. Your doctor will assess the amount of coverage needed to meet treatment goals.

Patients who would like the option of wearing their hair short in the back or sides of their scalp, or those who want the least amount of activity restriction after their hair transplant procedure may be good candidates for FUE. The NeoGraft 2.0 FUE System can also be used for ‘scar camouflage’ procedures for patients who have had prior linear “strip” harvests, other facial plastic surgery procedures (facelifts, browlifts) or sustained injuries, as well as for beards or eyebrow restoration.

Do I have to get a total 'buzz cut' to have an FUE/NeoGraft 2.0 procedure?

Typically, the donor site is the only area that needs to be shaved. However, if you wear your hair long, this is not necessary as harvesting using the NeoGraft 2.0 device can be done by shaving small areas that can be covered by overlying existing hair. If you wear your hair short, it helps to shave the donor site very close to the scalp to maximum yield and for better blending as hair starts to grow back naturally.

What are some benefits of NeoGraft 2.0 over other manual FUE techniques?

The highly ergonomic NeoGraft 2.0 harvesting handpiece is a natural extension to the hand, allowing for faster and more accurate harvesting of hair follicles. Grafts are smoothly and efficiently suctioned up into an irrigated collection canister for rapid preservation while awaiting implantation, allowing patients to reach their transplant goal with less time in the procedure room and fewer FUE procedures altogether.

Is there scarring with Smart Graft?

With Smart Graft, you get a totally natural look using your own hair to fill in thin or balding spots. There’s minimal scarring, especially compared to traditional hair grafts. Thanks to these tiny micro grafts, there’s no risk of a linear scar (and no awkward explanations if you choose a fancy updo or buzz cut in the future). It’s all done in a single, fast, in-office procedure. In just five hours, you’ll get a fuller, luxurious head of hair—and some serious self-confidence. There’s virtually no downtime, and you’ll be able to wash your hair like normal in just a few days.

Am I a good candidate for Smart Graft hair transplants?

This is something that must be decided by your hair restoration doctor. Both men and women may be great candidates for Smart Graft. However, some disorders and diseases can mean that certain treatments won’t help with hair growth. If this is the case and the client has enough “spare hair,” Smart Graft may still be possible and the ideal solution. However, a person does need to have enough hair for a micro transplant. There are also some medications, diseases, and disorders which can make a client a poor candidate for one or both procedures.

Anesthesia and Recovery

Only a local anaesthetic is required for FUE hair transplantation, with absolutely no need for IV sedation. Patients aren’t only alert, yet comfortable, during hair transplantation, but can also watch the process. This allows for collaboration between patients and medical staff in real-time.

The cutting-edge process is minimally invasive with no need for stitches, staples, or scars. You’ll have complete flexibility over future hairstyles, and the recovery period is much shorter compared to traditional hair transplantations. You can return to desk work the next day with minimal restrictions on your daily activities during the two-week recovery period.

Are Hair Transplantation Results Immediate?

Not exactly—but don’t worry. When the donor hair follicles are transplanted, they will stay in place for about two weeks. They will then shed, which is completely normal. It will take the new growth cycle between 3 – 4 months, and at this point your hair will begin to grow normally.

Natural, healthy hair growth and loss occur in cycles. It takes between 9 – 12 months to see full results, and of course longer for those who want to grow their hair long. However, hair transplanted with Neograft 2.0 and/or Smart Graft acts just like hair at the donor site. This means it usually stays relatively thick and is at a much lower risk of thinning over time.

Is FUE Hair Transplantation for Me?

If you have adequate hair in “donor sites,” whether it’s on your scalp or another part of your body, you might be a great candidate for FUE hair transplantation. Today’s hair transplant surgery is much less invasive and the recovery period is a lot easier. However, there are many types of hair loss. Those who have full alopecia or other less common types of hair loss might not be the best candidates for hair transplant surgery. The only way to find out if FUE hair transplantation is for you is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Roy. The good news is that in the vast majority of cases, adequate donor site hair can be identified.

Hair Transplantation FAQ’s

What Does Hair Transplantation Anesthesia and Recovery Look Like?

Patients maximize results by following after-care instructions, including the usage of special shampoos and treatments to encourage hair transplantation survival. The recovery period is relatively quick. Bandages are removed three days after the procedure, and most patients can resume their usual workouts two weeks later. Your regular shower regimen can usually begin 10 days after the surgery. It’s important to avoid scrubbing the hair and direct shower-head pressure during the first 10 days of recovery.

How much does hair restoration cost?

Again, it depends. This can be a frustrating answer, the Smart Graft procedure is customized for each person. But don’t worry, all fees are laid out and completely transparent during your consultation. Payment plans are available and HSA programs can often be utilized to help pay for treatments.

Can I bill my insurance for hair loss treatment?

We work with many insurance companies, but hair restoration is usually considered an elective procedure. It’s unfortunately rare that insurance will cover all or part of these procedures. However, we are happy to work with you to customize a payment plan and/or charge your HAS account.

How hair restoration actually work?

Once again it depends. There is no guarantee, and everyone responds differently to treatment. Smart Graft is highly effective. In rare cases, follicles can reject their transplant. However, even when this does happen, it is highly unlikely that every follicle will reject.

How should I plan for treatment day?

Preparation depends on which treatment you opt for.  If you’re getting Smart Graft, you’ll want to wash your hair the day of the procedure because you will be unable to for a few days post-procedure. Your hair restoration doctor will provide you with a complete list of pre- and post-care instructions.

What if I’m scared of needles?

Needles are required in both procedures. Anxiety can be a real obstacle for many potential clients. However, transparency before and during the procedure as well as having a medical team skilled in patient safety and comfort can help you overcome this challenge.

Does hair loss treatment hurt?

It depends. Comfort levels vary based on the person. All precautions are taken to ensure the process is as pain-free as possible. Smart Grafts take a while, but with topical and injected anaesthetics, the most “painful” part of the process is usually waiting with anticipation to see your fantastic results!

How soon will I see results?

The science behind grafting is quite straightforward. Hair follicles are taken from the hair in the back of the head that naturally continues to grow and is not susceptible to the effects of hormonal loss. The follicles that hold your transplanted hair are living tissues that grow cyclically. Once the normal hair follicle has been implanted into the balding area, the grafted hair will stay in place for about two to three weeks before shedding – this is normal and an important part of the new growth process. After shedding, the new growth will begin in 3-4 months and your hair will continue to grow after that, gradually and steadily increasing hair density on the scalp. Final results are best appreciated between 9-12 months.

How long will the hair last?

Transplanted hair (which is derived from hormonal loss-resistant hair on the back and sides of the scalp) will likely last a lifetime. Certainly, hair loss does not stop after transplantation – some people will need continued maintenance and further sessions will likely be required, particularly if your balding pattern continues with age. Progressive hair loss or the desire for more density may require additional hair transplants. An estimate of balding pattern and the number of procedures needed will be discussed during the consultation with your doctor.

What does FUE stand for?

“F.U.E.” stands for “Follicular-Unit Extraction”. This describes a method of harvesting naturally-occurring groups of hair follicles (a typically follicular unit can contain anywhere between 1-5 hair follicles) that are typically less than 1mm in diameter. This is the most advanced, minimally-invasive hair transplant method which allows for the harvesting of substantial number of hair follicles from the donor area without a scalpel incision or any discernible scarring.
